The Ambassadors of Jefferson Matters: A Main Street & Chamber Community will be hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the re-opening of the Raccoon River Valley Trail bridge on Wednesday, August 25 at 4:00 PM. Rain date is Thursday, August 26 at 4:00 PM. The location of the bridge is just south of 252nd street (gravel road) south of Jefferson. Free “Pedal Jefferson” t-shirts will be given away at the event (while supplies last). Attendees will need to walk a short distance on the paved trail to get to the bridge. There will be several speakers for the event, including Greene County Conservation Director, Dan Towers and journalist, Chuck Offenburger. The RRVT Bridge had collapsed in March of 2019. Dan Towers stated that large chunks of ice slammed against the wooden pilings that support the 600-foot bridge and about 70 feet of the bridge collapsed into the river. For the past 2 years, Greene County Conservation has been working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and were approved for 85-percent of the repairs to the damaged structures. The bridge is now open to bicyclists and pedestrians.
